MV Agusta - 750 Sport Disc Brake

The 750 Disc Brake Sport finally offered performance befitting the world champion manufacturer and to equal the Ducati 750ss. New cylinder heads and cams, larger valves and 27mm VHB carbs together with a higher compression increased power to 75hp. This was matched by the 790cc but slightly de-tuned America however the Disco had more of the look, sound, and responsiveness of the racers on which the MVs were based. Twin Scarab discs work well but can leak. Unfiltered carbs are affected by wind around the riders legs at between 80 and 110kph making slower riding fussy. Fitting small K&N type air filters and dropping the needles a notch solves the problem.

This was the last model produced by the factory and sold by them as the 850ss. In fact these were unsold Americas which were tuned and and fitted with optional extras in order to move them. Many dealers and others have created 850s out of Americas and many of the so-called 850s featured in books and magazine articles are in fact dealer or owner-modified Americas. The factory produced only 27 examples which were sold as 850ss s. They were also briefly called Boxers in the UK. In Germany they called them Super Daytona. The original 850ss was an America with the following options - EPM Mag wheels, 837cc engine, 27mm carbs without air cleaners or linking rods, inlet camshaft on the exhaust, triple Brembo discs, dual point Marelli distributor. 850SSs made for the US market retained the 26mm America carbs with air cleaners and had higher clip-ons and 850ss decals. Some of the last bikes converted by UK importers had a mix of whatever parts were available. All of the early factory produced bikes seem to have frame numbers below 2210100 suggesting that they were built from an unsold batch of bikes right at the back of the warehouse. First in, last out.

MV Agusta - 125 Monoalbero Corsa

MV Agusta won the first of its 37 grand prixtitles in 1952 when Cecil Sandford won the 125ccworld championship. At the time their Italian market customers were more interested in roadraces such as the Moto Giro and Milano-Taranto for motorcycles of up to 175cc equiped with lights and road equipment. Rules for these events did not allow twin overhead cam engines so MV produced this single ohc version which was otherwise identical to their GP winner. Around 400 were sold to private racers who discarded the kickstart and lights and raced at events from local street racing to top level GPs. These bikes were still winning races 10 years later.

Some books have claimed that these were made to use up left-over 600 parts. This is not true. The frames and crash bars, brake pedal and many other parts that look like 600 parts are in fact unique to the GT. The frame is basically the 750 Sport frame with footrest lugs added. It differs from the 600 frame. At least one disk brake model was built as one was exhibited at the 1974 Amsterdam show. As only 33 were built and a number of these were converted to Sports the GT has become the rarest of all the production MV fours.

MV Agusta - 750S America

The America was based on the disk 750 Sport but altered to suit the US market with air filtration, indicators and a de-tuned but larger engine giving similar performance. Sold in Europe as the 800 S Super America. Sales reached only 540 and not the 3000 projected so this was the last factory MV. Some of the many unsold examples were converted to 850ss spec by the factory and others.

The 350 Sport Elettronica was a development of the original 250 twin and shared the same frame and basic engine with a range of twins which included a Scrambler, trials and touring models. The 360 degree parallel twin motor vibrated quite badly at higher rpm but less so than in the later Ipotesi model which had a stiffer frame. The MV was expensive for a 350 but the name, performance and looks justified the price.
